Bush Theatre – Set Design
While its main performance space undergoes renovation, the Bush Theatre put on This Place We Know – a season of specially commissioned plays world premiered in six borrowed, non-theatre spaces across its community of Shepherd’s Bush, London.
As part of the set design for the play Zaida and Aadnan, I was invited to produce a design to fill the windows across six glass panelled doors in the performance space – a Community Centre in Shepherd’s Bush. The play, written by Gbolahan Obisesan, tells the story of two young British Muslims who have been channelled onto the government’s controversial anti-radicalisation programme Prevent.
Working with the Set Designer and Theatre Director I produced a design from a combination of graphics, photography, textures and drawings, based around the plays themes and the character’s stories. The design was printed on semi-transparent Window Vinyls, which remained invisible to the audience until the end of the final scene when they were dramatically backlit revealing the imagery.
